WE ARE EUROPE event was organized by the Prime Minster’s office of Finland, City of Oulu, Council of Oulu Region, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and the Chair of Barents Euro-Arctic Council.
Laanila students Ama, Ella, Emmu, Ida and Karla, together with youth from elsewhere in Oulu, Northern Ostrobothnia and Barents Euro-Arctic regions in Sweden, Norway and Russia, were all very excited about the opportunity to express their views on the future of Europe to Tytti Tuppurainen, Minister for European Affairs, Jari Vilén, Ambassador of the Barents and Northern Dimension and Mirja Vehkaperä, Chairman of the Oulu City Council.
“The EU has to respond to the needs and expectations of its youth. We want to encourage our youth to make their thoughts heard. As a minister, I am committed to pass on their messages,” said Minister Tuppurainen.

Tapahtuman tavoitteena oli kertoa nuorten mielipiteitä yhteisestä Euroopastamme. Pohdimme Euroopan tulevaisuutta eri näkökulmista. Omassa ryhmässäni käydyt asiat olivat itselleni tärkeitä, tämän vuoksi valitsin juuri sen. Keskutelu oli aktiivista, toivoa herättävää ja avartavaa.
Keskustelimme mielenterveydestä, koulutuksen takaamisesta, pakolaisista ja maahanmuuttajista. Haasteellisiksi nousivat esimerkiksi hyvä koulutus, joka ei ole kaikille mahdollinen, ennakkoluulot muita ihmisiä (pakolaisia) kohtaan ja mielenterveyspalveluiden ruuhkaisuus.
Tapahtuma oli erityinen, tapahtumassa koin olevani tärkeä, arvostettu ja erityinen. Tapahtuma herätti minussa uskoa ja toivoa tulevaisuutta kohtaan. Kuvat, tekstit ja uutiset tulevaisuuden maailmasta ja Euroopasta ovat usein uhkaavia, negativiisia ja toivottomia. Tämän vuoksi monilla on negatiivinen näkemys tulevaisuudesta. Onneksi voidaan järjestää tilaisuuksia/tapahtumia, kuten esimerkiksi juuri Eurooppa Olemme Me -tapahtuma, joiden avulla maailmankuvasta ja maailmasta saadaan parempi ja toivekkaampi.

We are Europe oli mukava tapahtuma, jossa oli paljon mielenkiintoisia ihmisiä ja mielenkiintoisia aiheita. Oli kiva päästä treenaamaan englannin puhumista ja myös yleisölle puhumista. Oli ihana kun tuli tunne, että se mitä sanoimme tuli kuulluksi.

The event took place under the topic "Future of Europe". We discussed about the role of northern european countries for Europe and how important the voice of young people is for a good future. In my working group we discussed especially about migration, mental health and education. These topics are important for us young people and it was a good opportunity to share our points of view on different topics. It was even better that Tytti Tuppurainen joined our discussions and heard what we were saying.

The Europe Event in Oulu took place a week ago and it was a great way to get introduced and make first experiences with politics. It was all about young people and how we see opportunities, worries and hopes for our own future. In groups we discussed about the current situation and specific topics like human rights, values, climate change and education. It was great to meet new awesome people and talk to them about how we see our future. Because it was also an international event, I have collected different points of views from people from Russia and Sweden as well. I found it especially interesting because actual politicians were participating as well and listening to us too. It really gives me hope to see so many people actively integrating in politics and most importantly, to see politicians really caring for our future, our opinions and our voices.“
